📖 Static demo — read-only snapshot

You’re browsing a static build of the Body IQ knowledge graph, so everything loads with no backend. A few things that need the live server are turned off here:

  • Global search (sidebar) is disabled — it queries the API.
  • The JSON API and the API “Try it” playgroundaren’t included.
  • The data is a snapshot — it refreshes only when the demo is rebuilt, not live from the database.

Everything else — the body map, progression ladders, coverage heatmap, exercise finder, and all anatomy/exercise/source pages — works fully. The full app (live search + API + database) runs from the source on GitHub.

Positions & Range of Motion

Start
Seated upright, spine tall, feet flat on the floor, hands resting on the thighs, breathing quietly through the nose
End
Same tall seated posture sustained through all four equal phases (4s inhale, 4s hold, 4s exhale, 4s hold), holds relaxed rather than strained
Range of Motion
Isometric hold — minimal joint excursion; only cyclic rib-cage and diaphragm expansion/recoil

How to Perform

Equal-ratio breathing: 4 s inhale → 4 s hold → 4 s exhale → 4 s hold. Repeat. Useful for acute anxiety reduction and attention regulation.

Coaching Cues

  1. 1

Count silently to 4 on each phase — pace through the nose where comfortable

    (verbal)
  2. 2

Holds should be relaxed, not strained. Drop to 3-3-3-3 if 4-4-4-4 feels effortful

    (verbal)

Evidence-Based Dosing & EMG Data

Recommended Dosing

1 minute minimum (effective); 5–10 min for sustained effect.

Muscles Involved (2)

Primary Movers

Synergists & Assistors

Easier Variations ↓

1

3-3-3-3

Shorter counts if 4-second holds feel strained.

Harder Variations ↑

1

5-5-5-5 or 6-6-6-6

Longer counts as comfort grows; ~6 breaths/min is a parasympathetic sweet spot.

Why This Exercise Matters

Everyday activities this exercise helps you do — essential means it directly trains the capacity the task needs:

Research Notes

1-min ecological momentary intervention RCT reduced state anxiety and improved inhibition accuracy vs passive control. Box breathing has a distinct autonomic profile (RSA differs from other slow-breathing patterns) [Riedl 2026 Anxiety Stress Coping; Little 2025].
