How to Perform

Seated or standing with the foot flat. Without curling the toes, draw the ball of the foot toward the heel — the arch lifts as the foot 'shortens'. Hold 5 s. Distinct from toe yoga: this is intrinsic-arch isolation.

Primary Movers

Tibialis PosteriorPrime mover of foot inversion (the tagged movement) and the leading extrinsic dynamic supporter of the medial longitudinal arch. The true short-foot primaries are the plantar intrinsics (abductor hallucis, etc.), which are absent from the roster, so tib posterior is the strongest defensible primary available.

Stabilizers

Tibialis AnteriorDorsiflexor/invertor inserting at the medial cuneiform and first metatarsal base; helps control foot posture and support the medial arch while the toes stay long. Conservative stabilizer role is appropriate.

Synergists & Assistors

Peroneus Longus (Fibularis Longus)SynergistDowngraded from secondary: it is an evertor, not an inverter, so it is not a secondary mover of an inversion-tagged action. Its first-ray plantarflexion and midfoot locking genuinely support the arch, which fits a synergist role.
Flexor Hallucis LongusSynergistCo-activates to support the hallux and medial arch. The cue to keep toes long deliberately minimizes its toe-curling contribution, consistent with a synergist rather than a prime mover.

Foot core paradigm (McKeon 2015). Targets the abductor hallucis, flexor hallucis brevis, and intrinsic plantar musculature. Common substitution: curling the toes — this is INCORRECT.
