📖 Static demo — read-only snapshot

You’re browsing a static build of the Body IQ knowledge graph, so everything loads with no backend. A few things that need the live server are turned off here:

  • Global search (sidebar) is disabled — it queries the API.
  • The JSON API and the API “Try it” playgroundaren’t included.
  • The data is a snapshot — it refreshes only when the demo is rebuilt, not live from the database.

Everything else — the body map, progression ladders, coverage heatmap, exercise finder, and all anatomy/exercise/source pages — works fully. The full app (live search + API + database) runs from the source on GitHub.

View FHIR resourceFHIR R4 ActivityDefinition — the interoperable form of this exercise

Positions & Range of Motion

Start
seated, forearm/hand supported, fingers long and straight and held together with an elastic band looped around them
End
fingers actively spread wide into full abduction against the band, open shape held ~3 seconds before controlled release
Range of Motion
MCP abduction from fingers adducted (0°) to full active spread against band resistance

How to Perform

Fingers abduct against an elastic band. The only intrinsic exercise with direct EMG validation for selective intrinsic activation.

Coaching Cues

  1. 1

Long, straight fingers — dorsal interossei spread them apart

    (verbal)
  2. 2

Spread the fingers wide against the band

    (verbal)
  3. 3

Hold the open shape for three seconds before releasing

    (verbal)
  4. 4

Free hand on the first web space to confirm 1st DI activation

    (tactile)

Evidence-Based Dosing & EMG Data

Recommended Dosing

10–15 reps, 3×/week (extrapolated; EMG study did not specify dosing).

EMG Activation Data

Significantly greater 1st DI and ADM activation vs stress-ball squeeze or baoding balls; minimized EDC substitution [Boudreau 2022].

Muscles Involved (4)

Primary Movers

Dorsal Interossei (Hand)Selective activation confirmed by EMG [Boudreau 2022]
Abductor Digiti MinimiIncreased activation vs alternatives

Stabilizers

Extensor DigitorumMinimized — intentionally low

Lengthened / Stretched

Palmar InterosseiAUDIT: MCP finger abduction against the band stretches the palmar interossei (finger adductors) as the direct frontal-plane antagonist.

Easier Variations ↓

1

Unresisted Abduction

Active spread with no band.

2

Single-Finger Manual Resistance

Therapist resists one digit at a time.

Harder Variations ↑

1

Heavier Band

Increase band tension incrementally.

2

Combined Abduction + MCP Flexion

Abduct while holding intrinsic-plus for combined DI loading.

Target Movements (1)

Finger Abduction (MCP)Metacarpophalangeal Joints
