Why Include This

Active range-of-motion (AROM) exercises like wrist circles are a long-standing, low-risk staple of rehabilitation used to preserve joint mobility, promote synovial fluid movement, and reduce stiffness, particularly early after injury or immobilization when loading is not yet appropriate. The mechanistic reasoning is sound and clinically accepted: moving a joint through its available range maintains capsular and tendon excursion and provides sensory input without imposing significant load. However, the direct evidence for wrist circles specifically is limited. There are no high-quality randomized trials isolating this drill; support comes largely from clinical convention, expert consensus, and extrapolation from broader AROM and early-mobilization literature. AROM is best understood as a mobility-maintenance and symptom-management tool rather than a driver of strength or lasting range gains, which typically require progressive loading or sustained stretching. Circumduction should stay within a pain-free arc; it is not a treatment for acute wrist fractures, unstable joints, or conditions where motion is contraindicated without clearance.

How to Perform

A gentle active range-of-motion drill in which the hand is drawn through slow, full circles at the wrist, blending flexion, extension, radial deviation, and ulnar deviation into one continuous circumduction. It is used to maintain or restore wrist mobility, warm up the joint before loading, and reintroduce comfortable movement after stiffness, immobilization, or long periods of static postures such as typing.

Recommended Dosing

Perform 8 to 12 slow circles in each direction, 1 to 3 sets, once or twice daily. Use as a warm-up before wrist or grip activity, or as a movement break during prolonged static hand postures. Keep all motion within a pain-free range; mild stretch is acceptable, sharp pain is not.

Use the opposite hand to gently guide the moving wrist through the circle, reducing the demand on the wrist muscles during early or post-immobilization stages.

Perform the circles with the forearm held in the air rather than resting on a surface, adding light postural demand to the forearm and shoulder.
