Why Include This

Cervical flexion AROM is a foundational self-assessment and mobility drill: the person actively moves through their own available range without external force, which makes it safe, self-limiting, and easy to teach. Clinically it is used to maintain or restore forward-bending range, to keep articular and soft-tissue structures moving after stiffness or a sedentary posture, and as a warm-up before more demanding neck or postural work. The evidence base is honest and modest — active range-of-motion exercise for the cervical spine is supported mainly by clinical practice guidelines, expert consensus, and general principles that unloaded, pain-free motion helps preserve mobility and reduce fear of movement, rather than by high-quality trials isolating this specific movement. Normal active cervical flexion is commonly cited around 45-50 degrees, giving a rough reference, but individual range varies and the goal is comfortable, symmetric motion rather than hitting a number. It is not a strengthening exercise; loading and endurance of the deep cervical flexors are addressed by separate craniocervical flexion training. Caution is warranted where full flexion is contraindicated (e.g., known cervical instability, recent trauma, or symptoms of myelopathy), so screening precedes prescription.

How to Perform

A seated active range-of-motion drill in which you slowly nod and lower your chin toward your chest, moving the neck through its available forward-bending range under your own muscle control, then return to neutral. It is a gentle, low-load way to maintain or restore how far the neck can flex and to keep the joints and soft tissues of the cervical spine moving comfortably.
