Bicep Curl

- standing tall with a quiet trunk, upper arms pinned to the ribs, holding a dumbbell or band with the elbow in full extension at the side
- End
- forearm curled up to full elbow flexion with the weight near the front of the shoulder, elbow still pinned to the ribs
- Range of Motion
- elbow flexion from ~0° (full extension) to ~140° (full flexion), isolated with the upper arm stationary
How to Perform
Standing or seated elbow flexion with dumbbell or resistance band. The forearm moves from extension to full flexion. Fundamental upper extremity strengthening.

Evidence upgraded from limited → moderate. Single-joint bicep curl produces significantly greater elbow-flexor hypertrophy than multi-joint alternatives (11.06% vs. 5.16% over 8 weeks at 3–6 sets × 8–12 reps to failure, 2×/wk) [Mannarino 2021, PMID 31268995]. EMG 20–50% MVIC in supination; dumbbell curl 50–95% peak RMS [Oliveira 2009; Borms 2017]. Incline and preacher variations produce regional hypertrophy differences — incline favors proximal growth [Kassiano 2025].
