📖 Static demo — read-only snapshot
You’re browsing a static build of the Body IQ knowledge graph, so everything loads with no backend. A few things that need the live server are turned off here:
- Global search (sidebar) is disabled — it queries the API.
- The JSON API and the API “Try it” playgroundaren’t included.
- The data is a snapshot — it refreshes only when the demo is rebuilt, not live from the database.
Everything else — the body map, progression ladders, coverage heatmap, exercise finder, and all anatomy/exercise/source pages — works fully. The full app (live search + API + database) runs from the source on GitHub.
Biceps Curl
Positions & Range of Motion
- Start
- standing or seated tall, a dumbbell in each hand with arms at the sides, palms facing forward, elbows extended and upper arms pinned to the torso
- End
- elbows bent to raise the dumbbells toward the shoulders at full flexion, wrists straight and trunk still (no swing or shrug)
- Range of Motion
- elbow flexion from ~0° to ~140° with the upper arms held against the torso throughout
How to Perform
Stand or sit holding a dumbbell in each hand with arms at your sides, palms facing forward. Keeping the upper arms pinned to your torso, bend the elbows to raise the weight toward the shoulders, then lower with control back to full elbow extension. Avoid swinging the trunk or shrugging the shoulders to complete the lift.

Coaching Cues
- 1
Imagine your elbows are glued to your ribs — the weight travels in an arc, not a swing.
(external) - 2
Lift the weight to your shoulder, then lower it slowly as if resisting someone pulling it down.
(external) - 3
Keep your wrist straight and squeeze the handle — don't let the wrist curl in at the top.
(internal) - 4
Stay tall — picture a string pulling the top of your head to the ceiling so your trunk doesn't rock.

Evidence-Based Dosing & EMG Data
2-3 sets of 8-12 repetitions, 2-3 nonconsecutive days per week, consistent with general resistance-training guidelines for hypertrophy/strength in novice-to-intermediate trainees; loads of roughly 60-80% 1RM or a 1-3 reps-in-reserve effort level.
Surface EMG studies consistently show high biceps brachii activation during curls, with activation modulated by grip: a supinated grip biases biceps brachii, a neutral (hammer) grip shifts relative contribution toward brachioradialis, and a pronated grip relatively favors brachialis and brachioradialis. Curl variants that place the shoulder in extension (e.g., incline curls) load the biceps at longer muscle lengths, while preacher-style positions emphasize shorter lengths. Trunk and paraspinal activity rises in standing free-weight curls compared with seated supported versions due to the postural demand.

Easier Variations ↓
Seated Supported Biceps Curl
Perform the curl seated with the back supported against a chair or bench to eliminate trunk sway and reduce balance and postural demand; use a lighter dumbbell or resistance band.
Partial-Range Band Curl
Use a light resistance band and curl through a pain-free mid-range only (approximately 30-100 degrees of elbow flexion), progressing range as tolerance improves — useful early after elbow or biceps injury.
Harder Variations ↑
Incline Dumbbell Curl
Perform curls seated on a 45-60 degree incline bench so the shoulder is extended, placing the biceps long head under greater stretch and increasing mechanical challenge at long muscle length.
Slow Eccentric (Tempo) Curl
Curl up in about 1 second and lower over 3-5 seconds with a heavier load than standard curls, emphasizing eccentric overload for strength and tendon-loading goals.
