Why Include This

Latissimus dorsi and teres major are large, two-joint muscles that adduct, extend, and internally rotate the shoulder; when short they cap overhead shoulder flexion and drive compensatory lumbar extension and rib flare during reaching (a common pattern in overhead athletes, desk workers with a stiff thorax, and post-lat-dominant lifters). Restoring lat extensibility is a standard component of restoring pain-free overhead elevation and is used clinically before loaded overhead work. Evidence specific to this named stretch is limited, but it rests on well-supported principles: static stretching reliably produces acute and, with regular practice, lasting gains in joint range of motion, and lengthening the lat/teres major directly targets the tissue that mechanically limits shoulder flexion. Its value is as a mobility and symptom-relief tool, not a strengthening or injury-prevention intervention, and gains require consistent repetition to persist. No outcome-specific trial is cited because high-quality trials isolating this stretch are lacking.

How to Perform

Standing in an open doorway, grip the frame or the top of the jamb with one hand at or above shoulder height, keep that elbow straight, then hinge the hips back and away from the anchored arm so the doorway holds the arm overhead while your bodyweight sinks the shoulder into flexion. You should feel a broad pull down the side of the back and armpit. Hold, breathe, and repeat on the other side.

Grip the doorway at shoulder height instead of overhead and hinge only slightly, reducing shoulder flexion demand for stiff or painful shoulders.

Kneeling/seated variation at a low surface

Kneel and rest the forearm on a low table or counter, sinking the chest toward the floor to load the lat with far less overhead range and no balance demand.

From the overhead grip, side-bend and rotate the ribcage away from the anchored arm to bias the lower lat and QL and increase total tissue length.

Contract-relax (PNF)

At end range, gently pull the anchored arm down into the frame for 5-10 seconds, then relax and sink further, using autogenic inhibition to gain range.
