How to Perform

Sit upright on a bench or seated calf-raise machine with the knees bent to roughly 90 degrees and the balls of both feet on a raised platform or foot plate, heels hanging free. Rest the resistance (machine pad, dumbbell, or barbell) across the lower thighs just above the knees. Let the heels drop below the platform to feel a stretch through the back of the lower leg, then press through the balls of the feet to raise the heels as high as possible into full plantarflexion. Pause briefly at the top, then lower under control back to the stretched position. Because the knee is held in flexion, the gastrocnemius is shortened and slackened, shifting the workload onto the soleus.

Recommended Dosing

General resistance-training guidance applies: roughly 2-3 sessions per week, about 2-4 sets of 10-20 repetitions with a controlled tempo and full range, progressing load over time. Higher rep ranges are commonly used for the soleus given its slow-twitch composition. Calf-specific dosing evidence is limited, so these are practical, expert-consensus targets rather than exercise-specific trial findings.

EMG Activation Data

The defining feature of the seated calf raise is knee flexion. The gastrocnemius crosses both the knee and the ankle, so flexing the knee to ~90 degrees shortens and slackens it, reducing its ability to generate force. As a result, surface EMG and biomechanical work consistently show the soleus as the dominant plantarflexor in the knee-flexed (seated) position, whereas the gastrocnemius contributes proportionally more during standing, straight-knee calf raises. The soleus is largely composed of slow-twitch (type I) fibers, which is the common rationale for training it with higher repetitions and longer time under tension. Exact activation percentages vary by study and setup and are not cited here.
