Chair Triceps Dip
Why Include This
A closed-chain, bodyweight way to load the triceps and anterior shoulder for the everyday task of pushing the body up off a surface (rising from a chair with armrests, pushing off a bed or the floor). Surface-EMG studies of dip and dip-style pressing consistently rank them among the highest triceps brachii activators, so the exercise reliably trains the elbow extensors and clavicular pectoralis/anterior deltoid that drive functional pressing. Direct randomized evidence for the seated chair variation as a clinical intervention is limited, so the primary justification is mechanistic and functional: it builds upper-limb pressing strength with no equipment, useful for reconditioning after upper-extremity deconditioning and for older adults who rely on arm push-off for transfers. It is contraindicated or should be regressed for anyone with anterior shoulder pain or impingement, since deep bottom positions load the shoulder in extension.

Evidence-Based Dosing & EMG Data
2-3 sets of 8-12 controlled repetitions, 2-3 times per week, resting 60-90 seconds between sets; use a range of motion that stays pain-free at the front of the shoulder.
Dip-pattern pressing is among the highest triceps brachii activators on surface EMG; anterior deltoid and clavicular pectoralis major contribute during the shoulder-flexion drive, while lower trapezius and serratus anterior act isometrically to keep the scapula depressed and stable.
