Terminal Knee Extension (TKE)
Positions & Range of Motion

- standing, resistance band looped behind the knee, knee softly flexed ~30°, feet hip-width, hands free or lightly on quad
- End
- knee fully locked into extension against band tension, kneecap facing straight ahead, VMO engaged at lockout
- Range of Motion
- final ~30° of knee extension (30° flexion to 0° full extension) against band resistance
How to Perform
Standing with resistance band behind knee. Extend the last 30° of knee extension against band resistance. Targets VMO and full knee extension.

EMG: VM and VL significantly more active during last 15° of extension [Gryzlo 1994]. Short-arc extension specifically targets vasti. OKC knee extension: highest neuromuscular activation (67-79% MVIC) [Andersen 2006]. For ACL protection: perform in 50-100° range or use short-arc only [Escamilla 2012].
