📖 Static demo — read-only snapshot
You’re browsing a static build of the Body IQ knowledge graph, so everything loads with no backend. A few things that need the live server are turned off here:
- Global search (sidebar) is disabled — it queries the API.
- The JSON API and the API “Try it” playgroundaren’t included.
- The data is a snapshot — it refreshes only when the demo is rebuilt, not live from the database.
Everything else — the body map, progression ladders, coverage heatmap, exercise finder, and all anatomy/exercise/source pages — works fully. The full app (live search + API + database) runs from the source on GitHub.
Thumb Adduction / Key Pinch Exercise
Positions & Range of Motion
- Start
- seated, forearm supported with wrist neutral and quiet, thumb abducted ready to pinch a key edge between thumb pad and radial side of the index finger
- End
- thumb adducted firmly into the lateral (key) pinch, adductor pollicis squeezing the key for a sustained 5-second hold
- Range of Motion
- thumb adduction from abducted start to full lateral pinch, then 5-second isometric hold at end range
How to Perform
Strengthening the adductor pollicis through key pinch (lateral pinch) tasks. Adductor pollicis shows nearly equal activation to FPL during pinch, with activity increasing proportionally with force. 79% MVC increase demonstrated after training at 50% MVC.

Coaching Cues
- 1
Quiet wrist — adductor pollicis pulls the thumb toward the palm
(verbal) - 2
Pinch a key edge between the thumb pad and the index side
(verbal) - 3
Hold the squeeze for five steady seconds
(verbal) - 4
Free hand on the first web space to feel the contraction
(tactile)
Evidence-Based Dosing & EMG Data
3×10 reps key pinch holds (5 seconds each), 3x/week. Train at 50% MVC for strength gains [Lyle 1998]
Adductor pollicis nearly equal to FPL during pinch [Cooney 1985]. 79% MVC increase after training at 50% MVC [Lyle 1998]
