📖 Static demo — read-only snapshot
You’re browsing a static build of the Body IQ knowledge graph, so everything loads with no backend. A few things that need the live server are turned off here:
- Global search (sidebar) is disabled — it queries the API.
- The JSON API and the API “Try it” playgroundaren’t included.
- The data is a snapshot — it refreshes only when the demo is rebuilt, not live from the database.
Everything else — the body map, progression ladders, coverage heatmap, exercise finder, and all anatomy/exercise/source pages — works fully. The full app (live search + API + database) runs from the source on GitHub.

- Origin
- Oblique head: capitate, 2nd-3rd metacarpal bases; Transverse head: 3rd metacarpal shaft
- Insertion
- Medial side of proximal phalanx of thumb via medial sesamoid
- Action
- Thumb adduction, assists thumb flexion at MCP
- Innervation
- Ulnar nerve, deep branch (C8, T1)
- Blood Supply
- Deep palmar arch
Movements (3)
| Movement | Joint | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thumb Adduction | First Carpometacarpal Joint | Primary | Both oblique and transverse heads; oblique has greater PCSA for force generation [Stamenkovic 2014] |
| Thumb Flexion (MCP) | Thumb Metacarpophalangeal Joint | Synergist | — |
| Thumb Opposition | First Carpometacarpal Joint | Synergist | Assists late opposition and power pinch |
Exercises (5)
| Exercise | Role |
|---|---|
| Thumb Adduction / Key Pinch Exercise | Primary |
| Comprehensive Thumb Putty Program | Primary |
| Pinch Strengthening (Tip / Three-Jaw-Chuck / Lateral) | Primary |
| Grip Squeeze and Release | Secondary |
| Thumb Opposition Sequence | Synergist |
