Why Include This

Indicated for reduced hamstring extensibility and limited straight-leg-raise range, which is common with low back pain, prolonged sitting, and post-injury stiffness. Static stretching reliably increases hamstring length and joint ROM: holds around 30 seconds produce measurable extensibility gains, and this is the best-supported benefit (moderate evidence). The supine doorway setup is preferable to toe-touch or standing stretches because the trunk and pelvis are supported on the floor, which reduces lumbar flexion load and lets the person isolate the hamstring without straining the low back — useful for older adults or anyone with back sensitivity. Note that evidence for hamstring stretching preventing strains or improving performance is weak; the honest, well-supported reason to include it is targeted ROM/flexibility restoration and comfort in tasks requiring hip flexion with a straight knee (bending, reaching, gait).

How to Perform

Lie on your back in a doorway with the leg to be stretched raised and resting straight against the wall or door frame; the other leg extends flat through the doorway. Gravity and the wall provide a low-load, sustained hamstring stretch with no equipment beyond a doorway.

    Lie so your buttock is close to the door frame, then slide the working leg up the wall until you feel a firm but tolerable pull behind the thigh — not sharp pain.

Recommended Dosing

Hold 30 seconds per repetition, 3-4 repetitions per leg, once or twice daily. Static holds of ~30 s are supported for ROM gains; longer or more frequent holds add little. Stretch to firm tension, never sharp pain, and breathe normally throughout.

EMG Activation Data

Passive stretch with low target-muscle EMG; the hamstrings should be relaxed (minimal EMG) to allow lengthening, while light quadriceps activity may assist via reciprocal inhibition.

Bent-knee doorway position

Rest the leg higher/closer with the knee slightly bent, or scoot the hips farther from the frame, to reduce hamstring tension for very tight or acutely irritable individuals.

Bend the lower (non-stretching) leg with the foot flat on the floor to flatten the low back and remove any pull on the lumbar spine.

Hips closer with full knee extension

Move the buttocks nearer the wall and fully straighten the raised knee to increase the stretch through hip flexion and knee extension.

Add ankle dorsiflexion / active hold

Pull the toes toward you and add a gentle contract-relax (push the leg lightly into the wall for a few seconds, then relax into a deeper range) to bias the calf and use PNF-style gains.
