📖 Static demo — read-only snapshot

You’re browsing a static build of the Body IQ knowledge graph, so everything loads with no backend. A few things that need the live server are turned off here:

  • Global search (sidebar) is disabled — it queries the API.
  • The JSON API and the API “Try it” playgroundaren’t included.
  • The data is a snapshot — it refreshes only when the demo is rebuilt, not live from the database.

Everything else — the body map, progression ladders, coverage heatmap, exercise finder, and all anatomy/exercise/source pages — works fully. The full app (live search + API + database) runs from the source on GitHub.

Diaphragmatic Breathing with Bracing

View FHIR resourceFHIR R4 ActivityDefinition — the interoperable form of this exercise

Positions & Range of Motion

Start
supine, hands on the lower abdomen and lateral ribs, spine neutral
End
same posture; inhale expands the trunk 360° (front, sides, back), then on exhale the abdominal wall gently braces to ~30% effort while breathing continues around the brace
Range of Motion
isometric supine posture — minimal joint excursion; excursion is 360° rib/abdominal expansion with a sustained low-level abdominal brace

How to Perform

Hands on lower abdomen and lateral ribs. Inhale through the nose, expanding into 360° (front, sides, back). On exhale, gently brace the abdominal wall (~30% of max) while continuing to breathe — sustaining intra-abdominal pressure without breath-holding.

Coaching Cues

  1. 1

Brace as if expecting a light punch — not maximal, not breath-hold

    (tactile)
  2. 2

Air should be able to flow in and out around the brace

    (verbal)

Evidence-Based Dosing & EMG Data

Recommended Dosing

5 cycles × 2–3 sets before heavy lifting tasks.

Muscles Involved (2)

Easier Variations ↓

1

Passive Diaphragmatic Breath

Build the 360° breath without the brace first.

Harder Variations ↑

1

Braced Load Lift

Hold the brace through a light deadlift, suitcase carry, or sit-to-stand.

Research Notes

Bracing skill for lifting populations (construction, healthcare, parents). Distinct from passive diaphragmatic breathing — the value is sustained pressure WITHOUT Valsalva.
