📖 Static demo — read-only snapshot

You’re browsing a static build of the Body IQ knowledge graph, so everything loads with no backend. A few things that need the live server are turned off here:

  • Global search (sidebar) is disabled — it queries the API.
  • The JSON API and the API “Try it” playgroundaren’t included.
  • FHIR resources are build-time snapshots served as static files, not the live /api/exercises/<slug>/fhir route.
  • The data is a snapshot — it refreshes only when the demo is rebuilt, not live from the database.

Everything else — the body map, progression ladders, coverage heatmap, exercise finder, and all anatomy/exercise/source pages — works fully. The full app (live search + API + database) runs from the source on GitHub.

Why Include This

Separates the strength requirement of a pistol squat from its balance and hip-flexor requirements, which usually fail first. A held counterweight shifts the centre of mass forward and makes full depth reachable without changing the pattern.

Evidence basis: expert-opinion

Positions & Range of Motion

Start
standing on one leg, opposite leg extended forward, a light weight held at arm's length in front of the chest
End
full-depth single-leg squat, free leg clear of the floor, heel of the stance foot down
Range of Motion
full available knee and hip flexion on the stance side; requires substantial ankle dorsiflexion

How to Perform

Single-leg squat to full depth with the non-stance leg held forward, using a light held counterweight or a fingertip on a support to offset the balance and hip-flexor demand.

Coaching Cues

  1. 1

Reach the weight forward as you sit back — it works as a counterbalance

    (verbal)
  2. 2

Keep the whole stance foot on the floor; if the heel lifts, ankle mobility is the limiter

Evidence-Based Dosing & EMG Data

Recommended Dosing

3×5–8 per side, 2×/week (consensus programming, not RCT-derived)

Secondary Movers
