Positions & Range of Motion

Start
supine, knees bent or legs extended, one hand on the belly and one on the lower ribs (optionally a band around the lower ribs)
End
same relaxed posture; on inhale the belly rises first and the lower ribs spread laterally, followed by a slow pursed-lip exhale
Range of Motion
isometric supine posture — minimal joint excursion; excursion is diaphragmatic descent and 360° lower-rib expansion with each breath

How to Perform

Physiotherapeutic breathing exercises targeting diaphragmatic excursion and rib cage expansion. Patient practices belly breathing in supine progressing to seated and standing. Significantly improves chest expansion, spinal mobility (especially lateral flexion), and posture. Equally effective as yoga and Pilates for improving spinal mobility while enhancing respiratory function.

Lie on back with knees bent. Place a light book on the belly as visual feedback for diaphragmatic motion.

Lie prone with forehead on hands. Breathe into the belly against the floor — the floor provides tactile feedback for diaphragm descent.

Wrap a resistance band around the lower ribcage. Breathe to expand the ribs against the band resistance.

90/90 Breathing

Lie supine with feet on wall, hips and knees at 90°. Breathe to restore zone of apposition and inhibit accessory muscle overuse.
