📖 Static demo — read-only snapshot

You’re browsing a static build of the Body IQ knowledge graph, so everything loads with no backend. A few things that need the live server are turned off here:

  • Global search (sidebar) is disabled — it queries the API.
  • The JSON API and the API “Try it” playgroundaren’t included.
  • The data is a snapshot — it refreshes only when the demo is rebuilt, not live from the database.

Everything else — the body map, progression ladders, coverage heatmap, exercise finder, and all anatomy/exercise/source pages — works fully. The full app (live search + API + database) runs from the source on GitHub.

Thoracic Rotation in Quadruped (Thread the Needle)

Draftmobility80%beginnermoderate evidence
View FHIR resourceFHIR R4 ActivityDefinition — the interoperable form of this exercise

Positions & Range of Motion

Start
quadruped, hips stacked over knees and shoulders over hands, spine neutral, lumbar locked
End
one hand threaded under the body across midline then opened up toward the ceiling with eyes following, isolating rotation to the thoracic spine
Range of Motion
thoracic rotation from fully threaded (arm across midline) to fully open toward the ceiling, ~90°+ arc, lumbar held still

How to Perform

Quadruped rotational mobility exercise. Patient threads one arm under the body then opens it toward the ceiling. The quadruped position locks the lumbar spine, isolating rotation to the thoracic segments. Clinically valuable for improving thoracic mobility in shoulder impingement syndrome.

Coaching Cues

  1. 1

Hips stacked over knees — only the mid-back rotates

  3. 3

Open the hand to the ceiling, eyes following

Evidence-Based Dosing & EMG Data

Recommended Dosing

2-3×8-10 reps per side, 2-3x/week

EMG Activation Data

Low-to-moderate activation of thoracic rotators. Primary benefit is joint mobility rather than muscle strengthening.

Muscles Involved (5)

Primary Movers

Rotatores (Thoracis)Short segmental rotators of the thoracic spine

Stabilizers

Easier Variations ↓

1

Seated Thoracic Rotation

Sit in a chair with arms crossed. Rotate upper body to each side. Reduces balance and wrist demand.

Harder Variations ↑

1

Thread the Needle with Hold

Hold the open (rotated) position for 5-10 seconds. Increases end-range thoracic rotation.

2

Thread the Needle with Band

Hold a light resistance band in the rotating hand. Adds load to the opening phase.

Research Notes

Quadruped position effectively locks lumbar rotation, isolating movement to thoracic spine. Thoracic mobility improvements linked to reduced shoulder impingement symptoms [Calik 2025, Hunter 2020].
