Why Include This

This is a self-regulated horizontal pulling exercise that lets a patient train the scapular retractors and posterior shoulder at home with no equipment beyond a towel and a door. Horizontal rowing is a well-studied way to load the middle and lower trapezius, rhomboids, and posterior deltoid: surface-EMG work on rowing variations consistently shows high activation of these scapular stabilizers, which is the rationale for including rows in programs for scapular dyskinesis, postural (upper-crossed) presentation, and general shoulder-girdle conditioning. Strengthening these muscles helps counterbalance dominant, often-tight anterior chest musculature and supports the balanced force-couples that upwardly rotate and stabilize the scapula. The row pattern itself has moderate published support; the specific towel-on-a-door variant has no dedicated trials, so its value rests on the transferable EMG/strengthening evidence for rowing plus its practical merit as an accessible, infinitely scalable home substitute for a band or cable row. It is a sound entry-level or bridge exercise, not a maximal-load one, because a towel/door caps the achievable resistance.

How to Perform

Standing horizontal pull done at home by looping a towel around both handles of a sturdy closed door; hold an end in each hand, walk the feet in and lean back with arms straight, then pull the chest toward the door by driving the elbows back and squeezing the shoulder blades together. Resistance is self-scaled by how far back you lean.
