📖 Static demo — read-only snapshot

You’re browsing a static build of the Body IQ knowledge graph, so everything loads with no backend. A few things that need the live server are turned off here:

  • Global search (sidebar) is disabled — it queries the API.
  • The JSON API and the API “Try it” playgroundaren’t included.
  • The data is a snapshot — it refreshes only when the demo is rebuilt, not live from the database.

Everything else — the body map, progression ladders, coverage heatmap, exercise finder, and all anatomy/exercise/source pages — works fully. The full app (live search + API + database) runs from the source on GitHub.

View FHIR resourceFHIR R4 ActivityDefinition — the interoperable form of this exercise

Positions & Range of Motion

Start
Standing with one heel on a low step or chair, that leg straight, trunk upright with a flat back
End
Hip-hinged forward with chest leading and a flat back until a hamstring stretch is felt, stopping before the spine rounds
Range of Motion
Hip flexion via forward hinge to the point of hamstring tension (spine held neutral); static end-range hold

How to Perform

Place one heel on a low step or chair, leg straight. Hinge forward from the hip with a flat back until you feel the hamstring stretch. Stop before the spine rounds.

Coaching Cues

  1. 1

Hinge at the hip — chest leads down, not the head

    (verbal)
  2. 2

Stop where the back is still flat; don't chase the toes

    (verbal)

Evidence-Based Dosing & EMG Data

Recommended Dosing

25 s each side.

Muscles Involved (10)

Stabilizers

Quadriceps FemorisIsometrically holds the elevated leg's knee in extension so the hamstrings stay lengthened; reciprocal contraction also aids the stretch.
Erector Spinae GroupMaintains the neutral flat-back hinge per the cue to stop before the spine rounds, preventing lumbar flexion.
Transversus AbdominisProvides trunk/core control to keep the spine neutral during the forward hinge.
Gluteus MediusStabilizes the pelvis on the weight-bearing standing leg during the single-limb loaded hinge.

Lengthened / Stretched

Biceps Femoris — Short HeadCrosses only the knee (pure knee flexor); maintained knee extension places it on some stretch. Minor contributor since the hip-dominant stretch does not act on it, but defensible.
Hamstrings (Group)Primary target. Hip flexion of the elevated straight leg lengthens the hamstring group across the hip while maintained knee extension keeps them on maximal stretch. Static stretch, so lengthening (not primary) is the correct role.
Gluteus MaximusHip extensor placed on stretch by the flexed-hip forward-hinge position.
SemitendinosusMedial hamstring, biarticular — stretched by combined hip flexion and knee extension.
SemimembranosusMedial hamstring, biarticular — stretched by combined hip flexion and knee extension.
Biceps Femoris — Long HeadLateral hamstring long head, biarticular — stretched over the hip and knee.
