Everything else — the body map, progression ladders, coverage heatmap, exercise finder, and all anatomy/exercise/source pages — works fully. The full app (live search + API + database) runs from the source on GitHub.
Backwards Walking
Positions & Range of Motion
- Start
- standing tall at one end of a clear walkway, feet hip-width apart, knees softly unlocked, trunk upright, weight balanced over both feet
- End
- having stepped in reverse along the line, trailing toe reaching backward and rolling from toe to heel as body weight transfers onto the rearward foot, trunk staying tall
- Range of Motion
- repeated reversed gait cycle — hip extension driving the reach-back with knee flexion/extension and toe-to-heel foot roll, cycling continuously through the stride
How to Perform
Retrograde gait training. Patient walks backwards in a controlled environment. Increases quadriceps demand due to reversed gait mechanics, improves proprioception, and reduces knee joint loading. A 6-week program showed significantly greater pain reduction and quadriceps strength improvement in knee osteoarthritis patients.

Use a treadmill at very low speed (0.5-1.0 mph) while holding handrails. Controlled environment.

Walk backwards up a gentle incline. Increases quadriceps demand.

6-week backwards walking program: pain VAS reduction 1.8 vs 1.0 (p=0.01), significant quadriceps strength improvement compared to forward walking [Alghadir 2019]. Effective for knee OA rehabilitation. AUDIT[medium]: evidenceLevel is set to "strong" but the supporting notes rest on a single small RCT (Alghadir 2019, VAS 1.8 vs 1.0); a single trial does not justify a 'strong' rating. → Downgrade to "moderate" or cite additional corroborating trials/systematic reviews before labeling the evidence strong. AUDIT[low]: evidenceLevel is 'strong' but the sources array contains only generic textbooks (Kisner, ACSM); the substantiating RCT (Alghadir 2019) is cited only inline and is absent from sources. → Add Alghadir 2019 (and any supporting trials) to the sources array or downgrade the evidence level.
