Why Include This

The hollow body hold is an anti-extension trunk-stabilization isometric that trains the rectus abdominis, obliques, and transversus abdominis to resist lumbar hyperextension while the hip flexors hold the legs elevated — the exact demand needed to maintain a neutral/braced spine during lifting, carrying, and overhead tasks. Trunk/core stabilization exercise broadly has moderate evidence for reducing pain and disability in chronic non-specific low back pain, and EMG work consistently shows dished, long-lever supine holds produce high abdominal activation. However, evidence specific to the hollow body hold as a named exercise is limited (it comes largely from gymnastics and general strength-and-conditioning practice rather than RCTs), so it is best justified mechanistically: it teaches posterior pelvic tilt control, rib-down bracing, and endurance of the anterior core, which are trainable, transferable qualities. Because the load is scalable simply by changing limb lever length, it is a safe, equipment-free home option for building anterior-core endurance.

Recommended Dosing

Hold 20-30 seconds for 3-4 sets, resting 45-60 seconds between; progress by adding time (up to ~45-60 s) or lengthening the limb levers before adding sets. Perform 3-4 days per week. Stop or regress the moment the low back lifts off the floor.

EMG Activation Data

Dished, long-lever supine holds elicit high rectus abdominis and oblique activation; abdominal EMG rises as the arm/leg levers lengthen and the legs are lowered toward the floor, while erector spinae stays relatively quiet as an isometric anti-extension task.
