Hanging Leg Raise

How to Perform
Hang from a pull-up bar with an overhand grip, shoulders actively packed (pulled down away from the ears). Keeping the knees straight or nearly straight, raise both legs to at least hip height, finishing by curling the pelvis posteriorly toward the ribs, then lower under control without swinging. The pelvic curl at the top is what shifts the demand from the hip flexors onto the abdominals.

Evidence-Based Dosing & EMG Data
2-4 sets of 6-15 controlled repetitions, 2-3 sessions per week, consistent with general resistance-training progression guidelines; no exercise-specific dosing trials exist for this movement.
Comparative surface-EMG studies of abdominal exercises have measured hanging knee-up variations (including strap-supported versions) and generally report high rectus abdominis and oblique activity — among the highest of common ab exercises — along with substantial rectus femoris activity, reflecting the large hip-flexion component. Direct iliopsoas recordings are rare because the muscle is deep; its dominant role is inferred from biomechanics and fine-wire work on hip flexion tasks. Activation of the abdominals rises sharply when the pelvis is actively curled into posterior tilt at the top of the rep; without that curl the movement is predominantly hip-flexor driven with the abdominals working isometrically to fix the pelvis. Straight-leg variations are consistently more demanding than bent-knee versions due to the longer lever.
