📖 Static demo — read-only snapshot

You’re browsing a static build of the Body IQ knowledge graph, so everything loads with no backend. A few things that need the live server are turned off here:

  • Global search (sidebar) is disabled — it queries the API.
  • The JSON API and the API “Try it” playgroundaren’t included.
  • The data is a snapshot — it refreshes only when the demo is rebuilt, not live from the database.

Everything else — the body map, progression ladders, coverage heatmap, exercise finder, and all anatomy/exercise/source pages — works fully. The full app (live search + API + database) runs from the source on GitHub.

Quadruped Rockback

Positions & Range of Motion

Start
Quadruped on hands and knees, spine long and neutral, hands under shoulders and knees under hips
End
Hips rocked back toward the heels with the lumbar spine gently rounding, stopping where the low back still feels comfortable
Range of Motion
Hips travel back toward heels producing hip flexion with gentle lumbar flexion, to comfortable end range

How to Perform

Flexion-biased exercise performed in quadruped. Patient rocks hips back toward heels while maintaining neutral or slightly flexed lumbar spine. Opens the lumbar spinal canal and neural foramina, providing symptom relief for lumbar stenosis. Doubles as a gentle hip and lumbar mobility drill.

Coaching Cues

  1. 1

Long, soft spine — let the lower back round gently

    (verbal)
  2. 2

Sit the hips back toward the heels

    (verbal)
  3. 3

Stop where the lumbar spine still feels comfortable

    (verbal)
  4. 4

Pelvis melts back like dough settling onto the heels

Evidence-Based Dosing & EMG Data

Recommended Dosing

3×10 reps or 3×30-60s holds, 2-3x/week

EMG Activation Data

Low-level multifidus and erector spinae activation during controlled flexion. Primary benefit is mechanical — canal opening rather than muscle strengthening.

Muscles Involved (5)

Secondary Movers

Gluteus MaximusEccentric control of hip flexion

Stabilizers

Erector Spinae GroupEccentric control during flexion rockback
MultifidusSegmental control during flexion
Rectus AbdominisMaintains lumbar flexion posture
Transversus AbdominisCore stabilization throughout

Easier Variations ↓

1

Pillow-Assisted Rockback

Place a pillow between calves and thighs to limit depth. Reduces hip and knee flexion demand.

2

Partial Range Rockback

Rock back only halfway. Gradually increase depth as tolerated.

Harder Variations ↑

1

Rockback with Lateral Shift

Rock back and shift hips slightly left or right to bias one side of the spinal canal.

2

Extended Hold Rockback

Hold end position for 60-90 seconds. Sustained canal opening for stenosis management.

Target Movements (2)

Lumbar FlexionLumbar Intervertebral Joints
Hip FlexionHip Joint (Coxofemoral)

Research Notes

Flexion-biased positioning increases spinal canal diameter, making this a first-line exercise for lumbar spinal stenosis symptom management. Can be performed as reps or sustained holds.
