How to Perform

Start in quadruped with hands under shoulders, toes tucked, and knees lifted about 2-5 cm off the floor. Crawl forward by moving the opposite hand and foot together in small steps while keeping the spine neutral, hips level with the shoulders, and knees hovering low. Move slowly and with control, then reverse or continue for the prescribed distance or time.

Direct EMG studies of the bear crawl itself are sparse; activation estimates are extrapolated from related quadruped and crawling-pattern research. Quadruped exercises with contralateral limb movement (e.g., bird-dog) show moderate activation of the multifidus, erector spinae, and abdominal obliques, and the bear crawl's reduced base of support and continuous limb exchange are expected to raise the anti-rotation demand on the obliques and transversus abdominis. Weight-bearing on the hands in a protracted, closed-chain position is a recognized stimulus for the serratus anterior, similar to push-up-plus variants. The hovering-knee position imposes a sustained isometric demand on the quadriceps and hip flexors that most plank-family exercises do not.
